In 2013, NASCAR Will Look More Like Your Car

NASCAR Restyle

?

The "Race on Sunday, sell on Monday" paradigm seems to work best when showroom offerings closely resemble their racecar counterparts.?As such, NASCAR's recent approval of 2013 Sprint Car designs should make the on-track action more relatable to fans when the series kicks off next February with the Daytona 500.

?

The product of two years of collaboration between manufacturers and NASCAR, the changes bring about more diversity to previous cookie cutter-style designs. The new cars will only have 10 body panels in common, a welcome shift that will see four new vehicles in the field: the Chevrolet SS, Dodge Charger, Ford Fusion and Toyota Camry.

?

Now that wind tunnel work is completed, the manufacturers are free to build the components that will comprise their competition vehicles. Jamie Allison, director of Ford Racing, says that "The fans have clamored for the return of cars that look like cars in their driveways and NASCAR, alongside us as manufacturers, have listened to that request."

Prey for China?s endangered wild Amur tigers released on Global Tiger Day

Wangqing, China ? Over 30 captive-bred red and sika deer have been released into the wild in Northeast China?s Wangqing Nature Reserve to help repopulate the area with desirable prey, giving the country?s endangered wild Amur tigers plenty to celebrate on Global Tiger Day.

The release is part of a tiger recovery trial project run by WWF, the Jilin Provincial Forestry Department and the Wangqing Forestry Bureau and represents a crucial first step in providing the living conditions Amur tigers need to thrive in the reserve?s rugged Changbaishan area.?

?There is very little prey for the 20 Amur tigers now living in Changbaishan, and this limits their numbers in China. Increasing the breeding population of the prey will help attract more Amur Tigers in the long run,? said Fan Zhiyong, Director of WWF China?s species programme.??

One tiger needs to eat the equivalent of a medium size deer every week to survive and without adequate food, the tiger population rapidly declines. Many of Asia?s forests are already considered ?empty?, with many trees but few animals.

Fifty years of decline

Over the past fifty years, the population of wild Amur tigers in Northeast China has declined from an estimated 200 to 20 today, due to massive pressure from deforestation, economic development, and poaching.

There are an estimated 450 Amur tigers now living in the Russian Far East, but recent sightings show that the population is slowly moving across the Chinese border and into the country?s Wandashan and Changbaishan mountains, part of the Wangqing Nature Reserve.

However, a recent WWF-backed survey shows that the lack of prey is a major hurdle in supporting the settlement of tigers in Northeast China. The same survey shows that the number of ungulate animals in the Changbaishan area - especially favored prey such as red deer and sika deer - is too low to support the recovery of the Amur tiger population.

?Density of red deer and wild boar, for example, is only 0.3 per square kilometer, less than half the number in neighboring Russia. The low prey density in China means it would be extremely difficult for the area?s forests to support the recovery of the tiger population,? said Dr. Zhu Jiang, Head of WWF China?s Northeast Office.?

?Part of the solution is to increase the stock of available prey. We?re also working on habitat restoration, and stepping up monitoring to stop poaching,? noted Dr. Zhu. ?This initial trial will help create the conditions needed to support the survival of at least one female tiger within the Wangqing Nature Reserve.?

At the age of 21, Bristol Palin already has three reality shows under her belt (and that's not counting her role in the 2008 presidential race, which packed far more televised drama than most of The Real World). Now, having joined the all-star season of Dancing with the Stars, the mother of 3-year-old Tripp is continuing her life in the spotlight. And in her eyes, it's a perfectly legitimate way to support her family.

Barry Ritholtz on Bonds - Personal Finance

Written by The RupeeManager Team ?? Sunday, 29 July 2012 17:08

We discussed the basics of Bonds day before yesterday and I read this awesome post on Bonds by Ritholtz.

Excerpts:

The most important thing you need to know about bonds is that they are essentially loans to some entity. As such, there are three main elements to any bond:

Quality: The credit worthiness of the borrower.

Duration: The length of the loan.

Yield: What the loan pays you in interest.

As is always the case in investing, there is no free lunch.

If you want higher yield, you are either buying riskier bonds or lending money for a longer period of time (you can also use leverage, making a riskier investment even riskier).

Bernanke, Geithner response to Libor scandal rings hollow

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Ben Bernanke heads the most powerful central bank in the world. Yet the Federal Reserve chairman says he was largely powerless to stop what some are calling the biggest financial fraud in history: the systematic manipulation of a key global interest rate.

It's a line of argument that has fallen flat with some lawmakers and investors, who want to know why Bernanke and other key U.S. regulators did not do more to end a potentially criminal rigging of interest rates affecting trillions of dollars in financial contracts.

Bernanke said last week he had been largely unable to directly address problems with Libor, or the London interbank offered rate, which he said he learned of in 2008.

"We are and need to continue advocating for reforms to the Libor process. It is constructed by a private organization in the UK, and so our direct ability to influence that is limited," Bernanke said in congressional testimony.

Timothy Geithner, who oversaw Wall Street as president of the New York Fed for five years before he became Treasury Secretary in 2009, has delivered much the same message.

He told lawmakers this week that he informed regulators "early on" about the problems and made recommendations to the Bank of England on how to reform the system.

"Seriously? They did all that they could do? I mean, come on," said Alan De Rose, managing director of government and trading finance at Oppenheimer in New York.

"Answers like those, they strain credibility," said De Rose, formerly a trader at a U.S. primary dealer, the selected large banks that do business directly with the Fed.

Legislators are similarly skeptical, at a time when the Fed is already taking heat in Congress for its regulatory failings that contributed to the financial crisis.

Republican Congressman Scott Garrett took aim at Geithner at a hearing of the House of Representatives' Financial Services Committee on Wednesday.

"You have been before this committee countless numbers of times since 2008 and if this is the crime of the century, as so many people are reporting today, never once did you ever once come and mention it as being a problem, never once did you come here and say this is what you're going to do about it," he said.

The revelations about Libor have further dented public confidence in the financial industry, which has been battered by a string of crises that led to unpopular taxpayer bailouts in many advanced economies. It is also another blow to the standing of regulators who have been widely accused of being asleep at the switch in the run-up to the financial crisis of 2008-2009.

Geithner told lawmakers this week he contacted the appropriate regulatory authorities, including the Bank of England, quickly after being informed that there were suspicions about the veracity of rates being reported by banks.

"We, at least I, first learned about those concerns in the early parts of spring of 2008 and we acted very quickly at that stage," Geithner said. "We took a very careful look at these concerns, we thought those concerns were justified."

The Federal Reserve Board, the New York Fed and the Treasury all declined to comment for this article.

Policymakers had a lot on their plate in 2008 as the global financial system was at risk of melting down.

JAY-WALKING OR HIGHWAY ROBBERY?

As well as wondering why U.S. regulators failed to follow up with the British authorities after no immediate corrective steps were taken, lawmakers noted the Fed itself continued to use Libor as a benchmark in its emergency lending programs, including the controversial bailout of failed insurer AIG.

"It appears that the early response was to keep using it, which means it appears that you treated it as almost a curiosity or something akin to jay-walking instead of highway robbery," Republican Congressman Jeb Hensarling told Geithner this week.

Robert Shapiro, a former undersecretary of the U.S. Commerce Department who now runs Sonecon, an advisory firm in Washington, says the scandal is vast and will continue to grow.

"Barclays is not some lone, bad apple. This could well turn into the largest consumer fraud ever seen," Shapiro said.

Barclays last month admitted to giving false information as part of setting the interest rate in a record $453 million settlement with U.S. and UK authorities.

Dozens of big banks, including JPMorgan Chase & Co, are under investigation. An internal probe at Deutsche Bank found two former traders may have been involved in colluding to manipulate global benchmark interest rates but suggested top managers were unaware of the fraud.

Things could get more embarrassing for U.S. regulators. The House Financial Services Committee has asked the New York Fed for all communications going back to August 2007 with the banks that helped set Libor.

The first trove of documents from the New York Fed showed Barclays had flagged concerns as early as 2007 and Geithner sent the email to Bank of England governor Mervyn King in June 2008 with the Libor recommendations.

Still, analysts do not see immediate repercussions for Bernanke and Geithner other than the risk of an additional loss of public confidence.

Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, a liberal think tank in Washington, says the comments from Bernanke stretch credulity, particularly after the Fed fought hard to keep regulatory power over banks in post-financial crisis reforms.

"He is insulting his audience to say there was nothing they could do," Baker said. "That is complete nonsense. If he had called up King and said that he has to fix the Libor, and if he doesn't this all goes public, then King would have no choice."

"I think this is a case of the central bankers being a good old boys club and that would be considered rude behavior. Rather than break the rules of the club, Bernanke allowed this fraud to continue, violating his responsibilities as Fed chair."

The apparently mild nature of Geithner's warnings about Libor to the Bank of England allowed King to claim he was never informed of accusations of fraud at all, critics say.

Simon Johnson, a former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund, lambasted the Fed.

"The Federal Reserve is responsible for the 'safety and soundness' of the financial system in the United States," said Johnson, now a professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management.

"Does allowing suspicions of fraud to continue unchecked at the heart of this system help to sustain the credibility and legitimacy of markets? Surely not."

Romanians vote whether to oust president

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) ? Romania's unpopular president was fighting for his political life on Sunday as the country voted on whether to oust him, part of a political battle that has raised questions about the rule of law in the fledgling European Union member. Early indications were that he might keep his job due to a low voter turnout.

Traian Basescu's rivals in the government are seeking to push him out for the second time in five years. They claim the 60-year-old populist violated the constitution by meddling in government business, coddling cronies and using the secret services against enemies.

Basescu, a former ship captain whose popularity has plummeted over economic challenges, says he's the victim of a political vendetta and has urged his supporters to boycott the vote ? a tactic that may help him survive thanks to a rule requiring turnout to be more than half of the total electorate.

At 8 p.m. (1700 GMT), three hours before polls were to close, the turnout was just 37.67 percent, according to the Central Election Bureau. That was lower than June local elections when the turnout was about 56 percent. On Sunday, 18 million Romanians were eligible to vote, including many living abroad.

Basescu told reporters he was at peace with himself. "I have done my duty as president in a manner that sometimes pleased people and at other times did not please a large number of Romanians," he said.

The political turmoil has dented Romania's credibility, with the U.S. and European Union expressing doubts about the left-leaning government's respect for the independence of the judiciary.

Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, the EU's executive branch, last week issued a stern statement expressing "serious concerns about recent political events in Romania in relation to the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary and the role of the Constitutional Court."

Critics accuse Prime Minister Victor Ponta, himself the subject of a plagiarism scandal, of orchestrating the move to oust Basescu as part of a power grab.

The coalition of Social Democrats and Liberals led by Ponta did very well in June local elections, but Ponta's popularity has declined after he was accused of plagiarizing large sections of his 2004 doctoral thesis, accusations subsequently upheld by a Romanian academic panel. The latest political turmoil has also dented his government's popularity.

Parliament, dominated by Ponta allies, impeached Basescu earlier this month, setting up Sunday's national referendum on his future.

The relatively low turnout came as Romanians baked in a heat wave with temperatures hitting 38 Celsius (100 Fahrenheit ) in the capital. Many took refuge in mountain resorts, others flocked to the Black Sea beaches, while shopping malls in Bucharest were unusually busy for a hot summer Sunday.

Most of those who did show up to vote were expected to cast a ballot in favor of ousting Basescu.

"I am not happy with what is happening to the country, the economy, all the political scandal and the corruption," said Cristian Neagu, 28, a computer programmer who wants Basescu gone.

Other Romanians said they were disgusted by the whole ordeal.

"There are bandits on both sides, and I can't be bothered to vote," said Vlad Tanasescu, 34. "All they want to do is to take revenge on each other."

Basescu has been president since 2004. He was impeached by Parliament in 2007 for "serious violations" of the constitution, but survived a national referendum.

He is a center-right politician, though as president he is not allowed to be a member of any party. Unlike presidencies in some European nations, Basescu's position is not merely ceremonial. He is elected in a popular vote and is in charge of foreign policy and the country's defense policies. He also names the chiefs of the powerful intelligence services.

Over the past two years, Basescu has seen his approval numbers drop largely because the government introduced austerity measures to meet demands by the International Monetary Fund in exchange for a multibillion euro (dollar) loan. Public wages were cut by one-fourth and sales tax raised to 24 percent, one of the highest in the EU.

Ponta heads the left-leaning Social Democratic Party. He became prime minister May 7, the third in four months after the previous two were ousted over austerity measures. Unlike his predecessors who were deferential to Basescu, Ponta has moved instead to sideline Basescu and his allies.

Ponta says that Basescu's confrontational style of governing and interfering in the justice system and government business are evidence that he is unfit for the job. He also alleges that charges that he plagiarized his 2004 doctoral thesis are orchestrated by Basescu's camp.

The Foreign Ministry opened polling stations in embassies in the United States, Italy, Spain, France and elsewhere where an estimated 2 million Romanians are eligible to vote.

'Grave concern' after child taken from home - Stuff

Alyssa Barker

TAKEN: Toddler Alyssa Barker was taken from her Helensville home by an adult family friend.

Alyssa Barker

MISSING: Alyssa Barker in the tights she was wearing at the time she was taken from her home.

A family is rueing its good Samaritan act of taking pity on a woman sleeping rough as she has now abducted their toddler.

As the second night closes since 18 month old Alyssa Barker was snatched from her west Auckland home police say they have grave concerns.

Detective Inspector Stan Brown says it is vital Alyssa is returned as soon as possible

"The temperature last night was very cool and it's likely to be colder tonight with rain also forecast."

Police today issued a plea for anyone with information to come forward.

Alyssa was taken from her family home in the tiny settlement of Makaurau north of Auckland by 27 year old Skye Mason about 3pm on Friday.

Mason had been sleeping rough in the area and the Barker family took pity on her, allowing her into their home.

The last sighting of Alyssa, with Mason, was at a Glen Eden home of associates of Mason around 10pm on Friday.

"As far as we know, Skye left Alyssa's family home without any baby clothes, toys, food or blankets with her," said Brown.

"It's possible Skye is hiding out somewhere or has even left the Auckland region. If anyone has seen her or Alyssa or has heard of anyone who has, they need to contact police," Brown said.

The police Eagle helicopter and specialist search teams are scouring Auckland's Glen Eden suburb.

Brown said Alyssa's parents "are obviously very distressed their daughter has been taken from their home."

Police said Mason had been staying with the Barker family for two days after they took her in.

Alyssa's mother, who also has a three month old baby, was inside the house when Mason walked off with Alyssa.

Police said Mason has a history of mental illness and a small criminal history.

Peter Frey

Don Perry joined Chick-fil-A in 1983.

By Patrick Rizzo, NBC News

Updated at 3:30 p.m. ET: Chick-fil-A's vice president of public relations, Don Perry,?died suddenly early Friday, the company said, leaving the embattled restaurant chain without its chief spokesman amid a marketing crisis.

"Don was a member of our Chick-fil-A family for nearly 29 years," the company said in a statement. "For many of you in the media, he was the spokesperson for Chick-fil-A. ?He was a well-respected and well-liked media executive in the Atlanta and University of Georgia communities, and we will all miss him."

It did not provide his age, cause of death or any details about who might succeed him. Perry joined Chick-fil-A in 1983 as its manager of corporate public relations.

Chick-fil-A has come?under fire from?some?patrons and politicians?over company President Dan Cathy's public?support for traditional marriage and the "biblical definition" of families.

There have been protests held at restaurants over what some describe as the company's "intolerance" of same-sex marriage.

Officials in cities including?Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia?have told the company it was not welcome, although some have since backpedaled. For its part, Chick-fil-A, which operates more than 1,600?restaurants?in 39 states, has tried to defuse the crisis by saying they intend to leave the issue of same-sex marriage to the political arena.

For the Dow, another blast past the 13,000 mark

The Dow pulverized the 13,000 mark on Friday, soaring not only through it but finishing 75 points above it.

It was a target the Dow hadn't hit since early May. It was also a reminder of earlier heydays, before the financial crisis shattered the stock market. It meant the Dow was just an 8 percent rally away from its all-time high reached in October 2007.

And to many professional market watchers, it was just a big yawn.

"We've gone up through it before and down through it before," said an unimpressed Jim Millstein, CEO of the financial advisory firm Millstein & Co. in Washington, D.C. "It's obviously not insulation against any future volatility."

"It's only 30 stocks," added Mitch Schlesinger, chief investment officer at FBB Capital Partners in Maryland.

No matter how you feel about the Dow, here's more information to help you understand what happened Friday.

?WHAT IS THE DOW? The Dow refers to the Dow Jones industrial average. It's an index of 30 stocks, all of them big, well-known companies like Microsoft and General Electric. It's supposed to give investors a general sense of how the overall stock market is doing.

?WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT 13,000? It's a key milestone. The very first time the Dow crossed that mark was in April 2007, in what seemed like go-go days for the U.S. economy. It reached an all-time high of 14,164.53 that October. But it steadily declined for months afterward, and when it crossed below 13,000 in May 2008, it didn't return to that level for nearly four years.

?WHAT HAPPENED THEN? The Dow closed above 13,000 again on Feb. 28 of this year, and it flitted above that level for most of the next two months. Until Friday, the last time it closed above 13,000 was May 7.

?WHAT DOES IT MEAN? The psychological effect can be important. When investors see the Dow pass a big, round number, it can make them feel better about the economy and thus more willing to spend and invest.

Like the rest of the stock market, the Dow tracks how traders feel more than it tracks the underlying fundamentals of the economy. The fact that it's above 13,000 doesn't erase deep concerns about sluggish economic growth or high unemployment rates in the U.S.

?WHAT WILL HAPPEN THIS TIME? That's anyone's guess, but the last rally was short-lived. The Dow peaked for the year at 13,279 on May 1. Then, spooked by a dismal jobs report, it plunged 444 points in the following six trading days, bringing it back below 13,000.

Richard's Real Estate and Urban Economics Blog: Can a name ...

I needed to go to the Brazilian Consulate to apply for a visa yesterday--it is located at 8484 Wilshire Blvd.? The building at that address is?called The Flynt Building, as in Larry Flynt.? I can't help but wonder if the name discourages tenants from locating there, and whether that in turn means it commands lower rents than it otherwise might.

It would be hard to know--if one ran a hedonic regression, there would not be sufficient degrees of freedom to determine whether the name mattered or not.

Gallup: Obama hit new low with business owners in the second ...

posted at 8:41 am on July 26, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Gallup?s latest synthesis of its quarterly polling provides Barack Obama with a mixed bag.? Earlier, Gallup had reported a slight increase in Obama?s approval ratings, but still below the re-elect threshold, and some subgroups reflect that upward trend.? For instance, Obama?s approval rating among install/repair workers jumped 13 points ? but it?s still only 44%.? Clerical/office worker approval jumped 8 points to 51%.? Most of the rest of the changes fell within the margin of error, except one:

?U.S. business owners? approval of President Barack Obama fell in the second quarter of 2012 to 35%, essentially tying farmers and fishers for the lowest approval among major occupational groups. Overall, professional workers remain the most approving, at 52%. ?

Obama?s job approval ratings by occupational group clearly relate to election preferences.?Gallup previously found?that Obama does best compared with likely Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney among voters who are professionals and service workers. Romney does best among voters who work in farming and fishing or construction, or are business owners.

In the overall average for the second quarter of 2012, 47% of working Americans approved of the job Obama is doing as president, and 47% disapproved. This is slightly improved from 45% approval and 48% disapproval in the first quarter.

Obama?s best category was ?professional worker,? which remained unchanged at 52/43, hardly a ringing endorsement.? Two others ? clerical/office and service workers ? topped 50%.? The other eight categories have disapproval ratings above 50%, including five that tie or exceed the approval rating of professional workers:

  • Manager/executive (52% disapproval)
  • Transportation worker (55%)
  • Construction or mining (53%)
  • Farming/fishing/forestry (57%)
  • Business owner (59%)

Business owners obviously weren?t terribly enamored of Obama even before the ?you didn?t build that? comment.? That prompts a question as to whether the anger it stokes among entrepreneurs will really do that much damage to Obama.? He might lose a big chunk of the 35% of business owners that approved of him in the second quarter, but the class-warfare tactic could help to improve his standing in other categories.

The Romney campaign won?t let that ambiguity stop them from pressing the advantage.? They have now broken out the ?you didn?t build that? campaign into state-targeted efforts.? This morning, Team Romney released this web ad for Nevada, an important battleground state in the interior West:

Presumably, these ads will hit the air when Romney can spend his general election funds, in about six weeks.

AWeber: New Editor for Newsletters and Autoresponders ...

Finally this spring AWeber rolled out their WYSIWYG (which decodes as what-you-see-is-what-you-get) editor, also called click-and-edit editor, or drag-and-drop editor. Basically what it means in plain English is that now each little part of your newsletter is represented by its own editable area. In order to add content to an article, header, introduction, image ? you click on a relevant area which opens a little editing box (with options very similar to MS Word) and create your awesome content. Then you can drag and drop content areas around the newsletter.

No messing around with HTML, no worrying about accidentally deleting some template code? Sounds great, right? Well, not quite.

We?ve done our extensive testing. As we were pretty excited about this development ? it would have solved a lot of pain for our clients who are into Internet Marketing and for us, when we have to check and fix their newsletters before they go out. And we?ve uncovered there are still a few issues that will limit a lot of your Internet Marketing efforts with email marketing but overall if you use AWeber now it will probably be of some help.

Here?s how it works.

In order to use the editor login to your AWeber account as normal, select the list and go to Broadcast messages. You will see the options switched around now. So if you want to use the old editor and your old template ? select the option below. Otherwise press the big button to experience the new feature.

Next you will see the new Message Editor. It?s got a couple of key features:

  • you can still paste your own HTML newsletter code or send a message as plain text;
  • you can select from a number of pre-designed templates that have been formatted to work with the new editing features;
  • you can filter templates based on colours or keywords;
  • and, you can create your own template (in a separate HTML editor), use the code in the Template Editor window, add new AWeber tags, then save and use in the list.
  • Once you?ve chosen and loaded your template into the editor you can start creating your newsletter. AWeber default templates will come with pre-defined areas for editing and some Lorem Ipsum content to show you how it will look eventually. You can then click on different regions on the newsletter in order to start editing.

The downside here: you can?t edit default templates. Either you like them and use them as is, or you create something else yourself. Although you can use various content widgets within the newsletter, they will have to fit into the default structure and settings. Image hosting still has to be done elsewhere ? your own website, Amazon S3, Dropbox, Google etc.

You might say here: did we not have these options before? What?s changed? Well the main change is how the message editor works. Previously, if you worked in the Design tab and were adding or editing your newsletter content ? you could actually format, add or remove HTML code in the background. That changed your newsletter layout and presentation. Now the code is protected ? even if you copy content from Word, you won?t suddenly get lots of ?funny styles? in the newsletter.

You can also add the following widgets to the newsletter now:

  • Headlines ? big headers that will separate sections in the newsletter or act as the newsletter?s title;
  • Articles ? text and image combination with an optional Read More link for your website;
  • Paragraph ? text only option;
  • Image ? large image to stretch as wide as your newsletter;
  • Button ? image button with a call to action;
  • Follow Me ? adds social media (Twitter and Facebook) icons and links if you have your accounts already linked with AWeber;
  • Products ? slimline tall combination of image + title + description + price. Works best in sidebars.
  • Coupon ? a little section where you can add your special offer. Usually bolder, without an image, centre aligned.
  • Logo ? adds your logo image to the newsletter. You can re-size it to be pretty wide and act as a newsletter header;
  • Signature ? your photo, name and email address section.
  • You can still add attachments (at the bottom of the Message Editor), Save for later, Test & Preview. Autoresponder creation (Follow up message editor) works exactly the same.

Once you are done with editing your newsletter ? click next to review and edit Sharing and Archiving options, then Next again to select which Lists to send to and Schedule.

Another major issue from our design perspective: very limited functionality for own template creation. Effectively you need to create a template that has a basic structure design without going into much detail per article/section. You will then need to add AWeber content tags which will give you 6 editable regions for your newsletter: Header, Footer, Content, Sidebar 1, Sidebar 2, Sidebar 3. Content tag is required (where you will be placing your widgets in the Message Editor), the rest are up to you if you need them. What this means is that you can?t define styles and formatting for Widgets reliably and when you load your template ? you don?t get any ?Lorem Ipsum? content there.

So a solution to this issue would be to load in your custom email template, add the tags, save, create a draft newsletter with all widgets set up and configured how you will use them in what places they need to be. Save this draft as your TEMPLATE DRAFT and don?t edit it with actual content or send. Then every time you need to create a newsletter ? copy this draft and populate your widgets with content to send.

Hope that?s been helpful ? feel free to comment below and ask any questions you have! For more information also refer to this blog by AWeber: new editor is here.

On the Call: Boeing CEO on possible deals

Boeing Co. reported better than expected earnings for the second quarter. The nation's biggest aircraft maker also raised its earnings forecast for the year, suggesting demand for new planes could insulate it from the sluggish global economic environment.

Boeing CEO Jim McNerney was asked on the earnings conference call if his company might take advantage of its current position of strength to make a major acquisition.

    ____

ANALYST: Jim, can you talk to us a little bit about your appetite on M&A. In down cycles, the big players tend to pick up the weaker players and is your interest ? do you have interest in small tactical deals or are you starting to maybe think about some larger deals going forward?

MCNERNEY: Well, I think the small tactical deals are kind of the flow deals that we're implementing in areas that you're aware of. And we're continuing that. I think the big major deal is one that would not be done without a great deal of thought. And that's really not on our radar screen despite the impending storm clouds. We think we've got a pretty strong business here.

Bangladesh garment unrest worries global buyers

Bangladesh's government has promised top Western buyers of the country's garments that it will address unrest in the textile sector over soaring living costs, it said Wednesday.

Last month, more than 300 major clothing factories were shut down for more than a week as tens of thousands of workers rioted for a 50 percent hike in wages, amid rising rent and food prices.

Representatives of 19 global garment buyers including Wal-Mart, H&M, Gap, Carrefour and Marks & Spencer met the labour minister to convey their concerns over the violence, the government said.

"Inflation is eating into the workers' earnings. The buyers said this issue should be resolved to prevent further unrest," said Labour Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain.

"Their concern is continued unrest would hamper production that may lead to delay in delivering orders, which is not good for anyone."

Overseas garment sales were worth $19 billion last year, or 80 percent of total national exports, and the sector is the mainstay of the poverty-stricken country's economy, employing 40 percent of its industrial workforce.

Hossain said he promised the buyers the government would make available cheaper food for nearly half a million workers and curb spiralling house rents. Some factory owners also have pledged to increase wages.

Buyers attending the meeting -- who accounted for 80 per cent of annual clothing exports -- refused to talk to media.

Unions said they were waiting for the measures to be implemented.

Bangladesh's 4,500 garment factories -- which rely on cheap labour to be competitive -- were hit by months of unrest in 2010 that forced the government and factory owners to increase wages by 80 percent to a minimum $37 per month.

Tenaya Capital Closes ?Oversubscribed? $372M Fund, Seeks A New Kayak

moneyTenaya Capital, the venture fund spun out of Lehman Brothers in 2009 with a history of backing companies like Kayak, Palo Alto Networks and Zappos, has just closed its latest fund totalling $372 million -- in its words, oversubscribed against an initial target of $300 million. Tenaya Capital VI is the company's first fundraise independent of Lehman's, with the two previous funds raised by the VCs for $300 million and $365 million. The fund will be used to make investments in tech companies across a broad range of areas -- from enterprise to consumer internet, as well as electronics and more -- in their initial stages of revenue growth. Tom Banahan, the MD of Tenaya, tells me that the aim is to keep the range diverse.?The average size of initial investments, typically made as a B- or C-round, will be between $5 million and $10 million. Tenaya may potentially also make earlier or later stage investment in portfolio companies, so the total amount invested in the lifetime of a company will be around $10 million to $15 million, it says.

What Church Looks Like?in 10 Years | Holy Soup

Where will you be in 10 years? in 20 years? If you?re involved in a church, it may look quite different from what you?re accustomed to today.

The church in America is currently shuddering under unprecedented societal change. Some churches are shuttering?closing their doors, rather than adapting to the swirling changes around us. But some are breaking through and finding fresh ways to share the ageless message of Christ with a still-spiritually-open culture.

Some of the innovation we see today was actually predicted over 10 years ago. At that time a think tank of ministry leaders from across the country met to envision the future. They accurately foresaw some changes we now see emerging.

For example, whereas the modern church looks and feels much like a theatrical presentation, the think tankers saw a church that would begin to look and feel more like a neighborhood place to gather around food and drink.

That model is sprouting up in divergent locations across the country?and outside the country.

Morning Star Church in Middleville, Michigan, worships in a former auto parts store that now looks like a homey little restaurant. ?We have a DNA of worshipping around tables,? says pastor Bill Wynsma. The church?s website describes the vibe: ?Remember those signs in some churches that say, ?No Food or Drink in the Sanctuary?? Well, we welcome you to enjoy coffee, tea and other morning beverages along with a selection of snacks.?

And, more than 150 churches across the country and Canada have joined the growing network of Lifetree Cafes. I?m blessed to work with this new ministry that?s designed to reach into the community with a conversion-based experience. Members of the community gather around small tables and enjoy snacks and drinks while they delve into host-led explorations of life issues?with a spiritual twist. Some Lifetree locations are inside church facilities. Others are offered in local coffee shops and community centers.

Whitsunday Baptist Church in Queensland, Australia, offers a beachfront caf? experience every Tuesday night. Soul Church Caf? provides ?coffee, dessert, and a chat about some of the more important things in life.??The ministry offers ?conversation, friendship, and a little bit of what you are looking for.?

In Communist China, where churches are highly restricted, Christian restaurateurs opened the Upper Room Rainbow Caf? in Beijing. Biblically themed d?cor surrounds the tables where patrons munch on cleverly named entrees. (On a recent visit, I tried the ?Five Loaves and Two Fish.? Tasty!) Curious Chinese residents gather here for Bible studies, Christian music and even sermons. ?We consider it a dinner show,? says the savvy owner, who stays legal and in good favor with the government.

So, why are these food-and-drink venues working? If we say faith is a relationship, it makes sense that our expressions of faith look relational. Sitting around a table, eating, and talking with friends about matters of faith is a relational model that Jesus used very fruitfully. And the conversational aspect allows people to interact with the message, something that resonates well with today?s interactive citizens.

As we watch this trend build throughout today?s church, where will it lead tomorrow? What will the church look like in 10 or 20 years? It?s an important question. The better we can anticipate the coming changes, the better prepared we?ll be to take the unchanging message to the changing world.

We?re organizing a new think tank to analyze developing trends and explore how they?ll drive change for the church in the future. This special gathering will include generations authority Neil Howe, and church researcher Scott Thumma. The Future of the Church Summit is October 22-24, 2012, in Loveland, Colorado. It?s an invitation-only event for church leaders, thinkers and influencers. If you know someone who should receive an invitation, please email me at tschultz@group.com.

It?s a healthy thing to read the signs and adjust: ?You know the saying, ?Red sky at night means fair weather tomorrow;??red sky in the morning means foul weather all day.? You know how to interpret the weather signs in the sky, but you don?t know how to interpret the signs of the times!? ?Jesus

    What do you see coming?

The legal status of dead man | Judicial Aid

Ordinarily speaking, the personality of a human being may be said to commence on birth and cease to exist at death and in general the law takes the same view. Dead man is no longer persons in the eye of the law. They have laid down their legal personality with their lives and are now as destitute of legal rights as of liabilities. Although the law does not confer rights upon the dead, it does to some extent recognize and make account of a person?s desires and interests when alive. They are ? (1) a man?s body, (2) his reputation and (3) his estate:

(1)?? According to law, a corpse is the property of no one. It cannot be disposed of by will and no wrongful dealing with it can amount to theft. Again any testamentary directions of a person as to the disposal of his body after his death are destitute of legal effects. Similarly a permanent trust for the maintenance of his tomb is illegal and void. However, the criminal law secures decent burial for all dead man, and the violation or desecration of grave is an offence under the penal code of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh as well as of England. Every person dying in England has a right to Christian burial. ?whether is ground consecrated or unconsecrated, indignities offered to human remains improperly and indecently disinterring them, are the grounds of an indictment? as decided in an English case.

(2)?? The reputation of the dead receives some degree of protection from the criminal law. Under the Bangladesh penal code, it may amount to defamation to impute anything to a deceased person, if the imputation would harm the reputation of that person, if living, and is intended to be hurtful to the feelings of his family or other near relations. According to English law, a libel upon a dead man will be punished as a misdemeanors but only when its publication is in truth an attack upon the interests of living person. The right so attacked and so defended is in reality not that of the dead, but that of his living descendants.

(3)?? By far the most important matter in which the desire of dead men are allowed by the law to regulate the actions of the living is that of testamentary succession. For many years after a man is dead his hand may continue to regulate and determine the disposition and enjoyment of the property which he owned while living.

Cut back on payment of estimated taxes - Business Management Daily

Don?t be caught off-guard by the next installment due date for estimated taxes. Fortunately, you can avoid tax penalties if you paid the amount required under one of three safe-harbor methods.

Strategy: Use the safe harbor method that suits you best. You might even switch methods midway through the year. There?s nothing in the tax law requiring you to stick with the same method through thick and thin.

Here?s the whole story: You?re generally required to pay annual income tax in quarterly installments or through payroll tax withholding (or a combination). The quarterly due dates for the tax payments are April 15, June 15, Sept. 15 and Jan. 15 of the following year (or the following business day if the due date falls on a weekend or holiday). Failure to pay the required tax can result in the penalty.

However, you can sidestep any problems by using any one of these three safe harbors.

    1. You pay at least 90% of the current year?s tax liability. This requires you to make a calculated ?guesstimate? of your current tax situation.

    2. You pay at least 100% of the prior year?s tax liability (110% if your adjusted gross income for the prior year exceeded $150,000). This is often the easiest method to use because you know the exact amount of your previous tax liability.

    3. You pay at least 90% of the current year?s ?annualized income.? The annualization method often works well for certain individuals, such as independent contractors, who receive most of their income on a seasonal basis.

Of course, the easiest way isn?t always the best way. For instance, you might be able to pay the IRS less up front, and keep more tax dollars in your own pocket, by switching safe harbor methods before the end of the year (see box below).

Tip: The IRS provides work sheets to help you calculate estimated tax liability in Pub. 505, Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax. Find them at www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p505.pdf.
