Canada: Kleenex hand sanitizer recalled over bacterial contamination

About 430 containers of Kleenex Luxury Foam Hand Sanitizer were pulled from shelves after the manufacturer detected bacteria that could cause serious health issues for people with weakened immune systems.

Hand sanitizer is meant to fight germs, but a bad batch distributed throughout Canada is being recalled for fear it will expose consumers to dangerous bacteria.

About 430 containers of Kleenex Luxury Foam Hand Sanitizer were pulled from shelves after product testing by manufacturer Kimberly Clark detected bacteria that could cause serious health problems for people with weakened immune systems, the CBC reported.

The bacteria pose little threat to healthy individuals whose immune systems are able to fight infections.

"For someone whose immune sytem has been weakened by other serious illnesses, especially cystic fibrosis, these bacteria can cause serious infections, including pneumonia and blood infection," Health Canada told UPI.

Google Analytics Goes Mobile

Google I/O: 10 Awesome Visions

Google I/O: 10 Awesome Visions

(click image for larger view and for slideshow) Google Analytics, the company's service for tracking and analyzing Web traffic, is going mobile.

On Friday, Google plans to announce enhancements to its analytics service, a series of reports called Mobile App Analytics, designed to help developers and marketers understand how customers are using mobile apps.

Google will be providing access on an incremental basis to Google Analytics users who sign up to participate in the beta test, with general availability coming later this summer.

"We live in a mobile world today," said Google Analytics product manager JiaJing Wang in a phone interview. "Mobile apps are changing how consumers do things online."

[ Read about Google's IaaS tool, Google Compute Engine, at Google Compute Engine: Hands-On Review. ]

Mobile, says Wang, is a now core part of companies' strategies. He says that 80% of marketers are expected to spend more money on mobile marketing next year than they did this year.

But gathering information about mobile users can be difficult, says Wang, because the data often resides in different places. "It's almost impossible to piece information from different sources together," he said. Google's value proposition, says Wang, "is to be a one-stop shop experience, to provide end-to-end value to app developers and marketers."

To do this, Google Analytics will offer user acquisition metrics such as the number of downloads and new users; engagement metrics such as user retention, user conversion, and app crashes; and commerce metrics such as app sales and in-app purchases. Google plans to make additional metrics from its online Android store, Google Play, available too.

Wang suggests a company like Pizza Hut or Domino's that has a pizza ordering app could use analytics information to understand how users get to the screen for placing orders, or to determine whether users make recommendations to friends or download coupons. Armed with such insights, companies can adjust their app or marketing strategy to get better results.

Wang says Google has rewritten the Google Analytics SDKs for iOS and Android, and plans to add support for custom solutions on other platforms. The SDK code now provides support for allowing users to opt out of analytics tracking and for secure HTTPS connections, to safeguard analytics data. Network access has also been optimized to preserve battery life on mobile devices.

Tracking is done using a using a random, anonymous number, says Wang, who says it won't be tied to a specific user or device and will not be usable to track users across different apps. This should help mitigate privacy risks associated with reliance on a tracking mechanism that can be linked to user identities.

"Our ultimate goal is to make the mobile analytics a first-class citizen and to make it a one-stop shop for marketers," said Wang.

SMBs have saved big buying software on a subscription model. The new, all-digital Cloud Beyond SaaS issue of InformationWeek SMB shows how to determine if infrastructure services can pay off, too. Also in this issue: One startup's experience with infrastructure-as-a-service shows how the numbers stack up for IaaS vs. internal IT. (Free registration required.)

The Pro's and Con's of Long Distance Relationships

I Initially wanted to let the headline of this piece be Relationships are Easy,

because I really think they have all the potential?

and ingredients to be if the two involved

would be grown up and driven more by love than ego?

and attachments,

stay out of drama,

and don't consider each other property.

We are not property,?

we shouldn?t be treated as it,?

or treat our loved one that way.

This is just a few initial thoughts about relationships in general

And now on to the tricky tricky part ??

the long distance version since this

is what I wanted to air some thoughts about.

Because lets face it,

?dating in the digital age,?

and the wonders of computers?

and cyber space has shrunk our world considerably and incredibly.

Which means that you can meet someone and fall madly in love with someone who's

on the other side of the planet ??

not just in the neighborhood library or the pub down the street.

If your neighborhood is equipped with that sort of establishments that is.

Most people I know shun the long distance version of love

and don?t really get it.

I can certainly understand that,

I didn?t either for the longest time..

But if handled with respect, care, compassion

and by putting the ever demanding ego aside,

I think it has the potential to be both a lifechanging

and wonderful experience.

But to make a thing like this work,

the things to be considered and actually ACTED on must be;

Communication,

?total transparency and honesty,

no mind games or shadow boxing,

straight talk, no secrets,

making a game plan and sticking to it,

make good use of the phone, chat lines?but

First And Foremost:

Honesty and transparency!

I happen to think that in our day and age,

giving a long distance love a chance is the equivalent

to how we went about it back in the day:

We didn?t make sex a part of the deal from the getgo,

We took the time to?well.. woo each other,

get to know each other,

to let the emotions grow?

and evolve before sex entered the scene.

And maybe, just maybe,?

a lot of our failed relationships and marriages

has a little bit to do with this?

We don?t really know each other before we tie knots

and chain each other down.

We want the pretty package wrapping without having any idea about

what?s hidden underneath.

And we want what everybody else have;

the wife/husband, the house, the kids, the car, the cabin by the lake,

the expensive pretty things that?s designed to send signals

to everybody about how successful and powerful we are.

And what it comes down to, they are just that?

Symbols of achievements..

Immediate gratification is the key word.?

In a relationship where you simply have no choice but to make the

non physical parts a priority,

we also have a unique chance of letting love and understanding,

respect and spirituality grow and evolve within it?

And this is so possible when we know that we are all One,

and we are all in each others energy all the time no matter

where we are or where we live.

All we need to do is prioritize differently?

And we need to practice more compassion,

more understanding,

more patience,

and more communication.

And because of maybe months and months of practicing these things,

by putting aside the ego,

and making each other first and last

while still understanding that both parties have a life to live in their end,

by the time the first meeting takes place

the relationship will already be on sturdy ground ?

you know each other.

Not from the outside, but from the inside..

And you know each other in a way that could possibly take years

to achieve, if ever,

by letting the ego play the starring role?

and making the physical the priority.

But that being said,

The internet is also a breeding ground for psychopaths and narcissists.

In short a breeding ground for the Cluster B disordered? who continuously

use chat rooms, any social network,

and any dating service to play out their disorders on unsuspecting victims.

So, though there are so many dangers out there,

and you would need to be careful,?

listen to your gut feelings,

(If something doesn?t add up, literally back out, and Background checks, run them!).

Read up on cyberpaths and familiarize yourself on how they operate ??

useful link at the end of this article ?

I would recommend you don?t let fear rob you of a possibly beautiful experience

even if it?s not going about it the traditional way.

Good Luck!

?

and increases great ones,

and blows up the bonfire.?

New apps also heading to Lumia 900 and 610

Nokia has started to update the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 with Windows Phone 7.5. The update brings Flip to Silence and Internet Sharing for Wi-Fi tethering to the handsets, which will also gain new exclusive applications that all Lumia 900 and Lumia 610 users will also receive in the near future, after a limited rollout in select regions.

Camera Extras, already available in the US and China for the Lumia 900 and 610, brings more shot options like Smart Group Shot and Panorama modes, while Contact Share lets users transfer business cards via SMS, and Play To shares pictures, video and music to other DLNA-enabled devices on a local network.

The software update will be rolled out to the Lumia 800 and 710 during June and July, with the apps downloadable from the Windows Phone Marketplace for all of the handsets. Nokia has listed software availability for each region on its Lumia support pages. [via Nokia Conversations]

The ability to classify images seems to extend beyond mammals. Pigeons?one of the world?s best-studied animals?have demonstrated their ability to distinguish between pictures of country and urban landscapes, letters of the alphabet, cartoon characters, and paintings by Monet and Picasso. It?s not clear, however, whether the pigeons, like humans and the Google computer, create separate mental conceptions for each category of object they gaze upon or if they rely on some lower-order visual cue. (In one study, the pigeons tricked laboratory scientists by relying on irrelevant features of the background to distinguish between pictures with and without humans.) There is another difficulty in comparing the Google computer to animals. The Google computers? cat-recognition ability was notable because they learned to deduce the presence of felines without human training. Without subjecting animals to human training, by contrast, there?s no way of knowing what the beasts are thinking.

Nearly half of the United States' airborne fire suppression equipment was operating over Colorado on June 25, 2012, CNN reported, as tens of thousands of acres burned. Fires raged in southwestern Colorado, northeastern Colorado, and multiple locations in between.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite captured this natural-color image on June 23, 2012. Red outlines approximate the locations of actively burning fires. The High Park and Weber Fires produced the largest plumes of smoke.

The High Park Fire continued to burn west of Fort Collins. Started by lightning on June 9, 2012, this blaze had consumed 83,205 acres (33,672 hectares), making it the second-largest fire in Colorado history, after the Hayman Fire that burned in 2002. As of June 25, more than 2,000 people were fighting the High Park Fire, and firefighters had it 45 percent contained, according to InciWeb. Nevertheless, The Denver Post reported that the fire had destroyed 248 homes, making it the most destructive in Colorado history, even if it was not the largest.

In the opposite corner of the state, the Weber Fire started around 4:15 p.m. on June 22. As of June 25, the fire had burned approximately 8,300 acres (3,400 hectares) and was being fought by 164 personnel. The cause was under investigation. The fire had high growth potential because of possible wind gusts from thunderstorms, InciWeb reported. On the other side of Durango, the Little Sand Fire had been burning for weeks after being started by a lightning strike on May 13. As of June 25, that fire had burned 21,616 acres (8,748 hectares), was being fought by nearly 200 people, and was 31 percent contained.

West of Colorado Springs, the Waldo Canyon Fire forced 11,000 people from their homes, many of them compelled to evacuate in the middle of the night on June 23?. The fire started around noon on June 23, and by June 25 it had grown to 3,446 acres (1,395 hectares). InciWeb stated that 450 firefighters were battling the blaze, which retained the potential for rapid growth.

The Woodland Heights Fire just west of Estes Park was small but very destructive, consuming 27 acres (11 hectares) and destroying 22 homes, Denver's Channel 7 News reported. That fire was completely contained by the evening of June 24.

As fires burned, Colorado also coped with extreme heat. The Denver Post reported that Denver endured triple-digit temperatures June 22 through 24, and the National Weather Service forecast temperatures of at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) for June 25 and 26, with temperatures in the upper 90s through June 29.

Colorado's fires have followed a dry spring. Although the state experienced unusually heavy snow in February, little snow followed in March and April, part of a larger pattern of low snowfall. By June 19, 2012, conditions throughout the state ranged from unusually dry to extreme drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

On June 25, 2012, Tim Mathewson, a fire meteorologist with the Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center, remarked: "Current conditions are comparable to 2002 fire season, which was the worst in Colorado history. Fires haven't burned as many acres at this point, but the drought conditions and fuel conditions are right up there with the 2002 season, if not worse."

The different strategies that you can resort to to avoid arthritis in fingers include the following:

* Exercise: when arthritis pain afflicts the fingers, surely you will have trouble moving it. Then again, experts are convinced that immobility can only intensify the condition because it only cause the joints to stiffen more. Because of this, it is best to opt for workout routines that can help you improve the mobility in your fingers and prevent the condition from damaging the joints further. When affected by arthritis in fingers, it is recommended to make sure that the fingers are stretched often since retaining them in a single position can only exacerbate the condition.

* Medication: based on studies, the treatment for arthritis in fingers should depend on the severity of the pain and the overall health condition of the affected individual. While searching for remedy for the disorder, it is essential to consult the physician. Various OTC medications for inflammation are readily available, such as Advil and Aleve and prescription drugs including Celebrex. These are all useful in minimizing the pain indicators of arthritis in fingers. Injections with numbing agents could also be used to alleviate acute pain but this should be applied under the guidance of a healthcare expert to avoid any complications. Once the fingers are numb, braces can be utilized to prevent the movement that triggers the pain. The usage of splints for an extended time, however, needs to be avoided to prevent the occurrence of muscle atrophy.

* Surgery: in case regular workout routines and treatments cannot assist you on how to steer clear of arthritis in fingers, medical doctors might point to surgical procedures for the problem. The purpose of the surgery treatment is to preserve the joint by rebuilding it. Then again, in case the damaged joint is beyond repair and the fingers are immobilized, bone fusion may be important. This is where the worn-out joints are eliminated to take out the main source of pain. Then again, the finger with merged joints may not be moved for good. Joint replacement can be another choice when searching for treatment against the problem and to be able to regain correct joint movements. The joints will be substituted using a synthetic material, just as the ones being employed for knee and hip replacement techniques. It was reported that finger joint replacement surgical treatments could significantly enhance the problem and restore mobility to the afflicted finger.

For other instances of arthritis, it is better to speak with your medical doctor for details. It is also needed to learn more about what causes arthritis to avoid the condition effectively. Note that that medical diagnosis ought to be done when preliminary symptoms are experienced in order to utilize the suitable treatment solution, avoid the problem from aggravating and avoid further damage to the joints.

Analysis: Egypt's big turn under Muslim Brotherhood

Egypt has elected a conservative president who has said he wants to impose Islamic law. How he will change the country remains unclear. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

By Richard Engel, NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent

CAIRO, Egypt ??The Muslim Brotherhood has won the presidency.? Will it bring a new Egypt?? I can?t see how it won?t.

This morning a Christian woman I?ve known casually for years came up to me and asked if I could help her seek political asylum in the United States.? Many Christians, women and moderate Muslims worry about the Muslim Brotherhood?s promise to bring Islamic Law.? It?s not a good sign if the day after elections that people are asking how they can escape the country.

Last night in Tahrir Square Muslim Brotherhood members were celebrating?their victory, calling it not a win for democracy, but divine intervention. ?They acknowledged that a free vote brought them to power, but saw God?s hand filling the ballot boxes. ?

In an analysis piece last week I asked, if democracy brings a non-democratic party, is that a win for democracy?? Today some Egyptians don?t think so and have considerable buyers? remorse, feeling the clich?, "be careful of what you wish for."

Egyptians face a new Egypt under the Muslim Brotherhood

In Tahrir Square street vendors now sell badges with Mohammed Morsi's?photograph. ?Some Egyptians wear them to show support and solidarity, like wearing a U.S. presidential campaign pin.? I bought one.? It?s sitting on my desk now in Cairo.? The laminated badge also has the Muslim Brotherhood?s logo of two crossed swords with a Quran between the blades.? Beneath the swords is a single phrase, ?And Prepare.?

It?s a quote from the Quran which in the light of the Brotherhood?s win deserves elaboration.?

?And prepare? comes from the Quran?s Chapter 8 on "the spoils of war." ?The full quote is:

?And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.?

?And Prepare? means to prepare for battle against God?s enemies.?

NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin has the latest on Egypt's presidential election and what the results mean for the U.S., Israel and the rest of the Middle East.

When I think about the Muslim Brotherhood, I remember a hot, sticky evening in 1998 when I was working as a local journalist in Cairo.? I was in the lawyers' syndicate building in central Cairo.?

The syndicate was, and still is, dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood.? I had many contacts there and was a frequent visitor.? That evening, I sat drinking strong coffee with a group of about a half dozen members of the Brotherhood.? We spoke for hours.?

I remember the conversation vividly because I have had so many just like it.? The Brotherhood members mostly talked about Israel.? They were obsessed with the Mossad, Israel?s powerful spy agency. ?According to them, the Mossad ran everything in the Middle East.?

They also said America was at war with Islam.? They told me Osama bin Laden was an American creation.? They talked about how Jews ran the world, and how the only group as powerful as the Mossad was the "Jewish Lobby" in Washington.? Jews and Israel, they said, used America?s muscle to dominate the Arab world through proxy dictators like Mubarak.? They told me how Israel was deliberately exporting chemicals that spread AIDS and cancer among Egyptians.?

Egypt's?Morsi: Bloodshed will not be in vain

They told me the Americans people, whom they considered decent and God fearing, were ignorant of the games played on them by Jews and their lobby. ?One Jewish-Israeli-American conspiracy rolled into the next. ?

I remember thinking all those 15 years ago as I sipped coffee and looked around at the syndicate, I hope these guys don't come to power.? But even then I suspected one day it would happen ??there were simply too many Egyptians who thought just like the people drinking coffee in the syndicate. ?

After winning Egypt's presidential election, Mohammed Morsi claims to have quit the Muslim Brotherhood. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Cairo, Egypt.

They packed the universities and professional unions.? They wrote the little paperback books sold on blankets on Cairo sidewalks linking Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden, the Bush family, the Jewish Lobby, Freemasons and of course the Mossad in elaborate plots against Egypt and Muslims. ?

There are clearly many Egyptian free-thinkers and intellectuals -- lots of wonderful Egyptian artists and architects and scientists.? But the conversation I was having in the syndicate was much more common.

Morsi now talks about moderation.? Western diplomats hope he means it and that the Brotherhood will have to become more pragmatic now that it will have to actually run a government.? That could very well happen, but pragmatism seems unlikely to erase a mentality that is deeply ingrained and which will, especially in time of crisis, expose itself sooner or later.

Egyptians fill Cairo's Tahrir Square in anticipation of a new government being announced. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

NBC News: Egypt's ex-dictator Hosni Mubarak slips into coma

Morsi still has to battle with the military for power.? The military holds key authorities?which it took through steps that were probably illegal. ?The army?s position looks weaker now that the Brotherhood has won an election that was widely considered free and fair.

Egypt took a big turn last night.? I hope now the Brotherhood can move beyond a mentality of conspiracies and turn this country into a success.? If it can?t, the Middle East faces a tough road ahead.

Shirley MacLaine and Maggie Smith.

The dames of "Downton Abbey" have traded their first televised barbs!?

Shirley MacLaine, who is joining the season three cast as Lady Cora's mother, Martha Levinson, was honored on June 7 with a lifetime achievement award from the American Film Institute. During the ceremony, Elizabeth McGovern (who plays Lady Cora) introduced a clip from the upcoming season, which aired June 24 on TVLand. But it wasn't just any clip -- it was the first meeting between Martha and the sharp-tongued Dowager Countess (played by Maggie Smith).?

Check it out:

Clearly, fans of the show are in for some great dialogue between the two ladies! As Joanne Froggatt (who plays maid Anna) told us, Smith and MacLaine not only have "amazing" chemistry, the two characters will "get to have some spiky conversations between them."

"Downton Abbey" season three will air sometime in 2013 on PBS.

We can't wait!

Who do you predict will win the majority of season three's verbal throwdowns: the Dowager Countess or newcomer Martha Levinson? Tell us on our Facebook page!

Italy beats England in shootout

Italians advance to take on Germany in Euro 2012 semifinal

Image: Italy celebratesAP

Italy's Alessandro Diamanti, left, and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, second left, celebrate with teammates after winning the penalty shootout against England on Sunday.

By GRAHAM DUNBAR

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:49 p.m. ET June 24, 2012

KIEV, Ukraine - Alessandro Diamanti scored the decisive penalty kick Sunday to send Italy through to the European Championship semifinals with a 4-2 win in the shootout following a 0-0 tie with England and a spot.

Ashley Young hit the crossbar with England's third, and Ashley Cole's attempt was saved by Gianluigi Buffon.

Italy will next play Germany in the semifinals on Thursday in Warsaw, Poland. Defending champion Spain plays Portugal on Wednesday in Donetsk, Ukraine.

Mario Balotelli, Andrea Pirlo - with an audacious slow chip-shot down the middle of the goal - and Antonio Nocerino also scored for Italy. Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney scored England's penalties.

The match ended 0-0 after 120 minutes of play. The Italians twice hit the post, but were also let down by poor composure in front of goal. Diamanti clipped the post with a curling cross in the 101st minute, and swept a clear shot wide in the clearest chance of the second period of extra time.

Nocerino, another substitute, thought he had scored from Diamanti's cross in the 115th but was offside.

Daniele De Rossi hit the post in the third minute, and Buffon saved a shot from Glen Johnson in the fifth.

For England, it was yet another exit from a major tournament in the quarterfinals after a penalty shootout. England lost to Portugal in the same manner at Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup.

"We have done the country proud but again we go home with heartbreak and it's difficult to take," said Gerrard, who played in both those previous shootout losses.

Italy dominated the match, which ended 0-0 after 120 minutes of play. The Italians twice hit the post, but were also let down by poor composure in front of goal. Diamanti clipped the post with a curling cross in the 101st minute, and swept a clear shot wide.

The first scoreless match at Euro 2012 was neither dull nor lacking good soccer.

Italy's attacking desire and creativity under coach Cesare Prandelli had playmaker Andrea Pirlo at its heart. Italy had 35 shots, compared to only nine for England.

England had briefly led the shootout after Riccardo Montolivo missed Italy's second penalty. His shot went wide of Joe Hart's right post as the England goalkeeper guessed correctly.

Rooney then sent Buffon the wrong way, firing in his spot kick to the keeper's right to give England a 2-1 lead.

The momentum shifted after Pirlo's bold piece of skill leveled at 2-2.

It had been perhaps the toughest Euro 2012 quarterfinal match to predict, and Italy and England set the tone by both coming close within five minutes.

De Rossi hit the post with a spinning left-foot shot from 25 yards, then Johnson's scooped shot from close range was swatted away by Buffon.

An intriguing match almost demanded that Balotelli take center stage. The Italy forward ran clear in the 25th, but hesitated and allowed John Terry to block his chipped shot.

Balotelli forced Hart, his teammate at Manchester City, to save an acrobatic shot, then surged between England's central defenders before putting a half-volley over the crossbar. He kicked the goal post in frustration.

Italy continued surging in the second half and De Rossi, taking a ball over his shoulder, scuffed his shot wide. De Rossi sank to his knees in obvious exasperation, and more Italian frustration quickly followed.

Three rapid-fire chances in the 52nd saw Hart beat away De Rossi's long-range shot, block Balotelli's follow-up and watch Montolivo lash the loose ball high.

England coach Roy Hodgson had to react to Italy's dominance, and sent on substitutes Andy Carroll and Theo Walcott, who both scored in a 3-2 win over Sweden.

Carroll's muscular presence created a shooting chance for Young but England still failed to convince. Rooney made little impression after an early diving header.

De Rossi was replaced by Nocerino and the substitute threatened in the 89th. He took another crafty pass from Pirlo on the run, but Johnson tracked back to block.

Deep into injury time, Italian defensive jitters created a chance for Rooney but his overhead kick sailed high.
