Brother keeps hope alive as cruise search is halted

Stringer/Italy / Reuters

Kevin Rebello, brother of Indian citizen Russel Rebello, who worked as a waiter on the Costa Concordia and is still missing, walks in Porto Santo Stefano, Italy on Wednesday.

By Duncan Golestani, NBC News

GIGLIO ISLAND, Italy ? Moving along the harbor wall, in the shadow of the half-submerged Costa Concordia, Kevin Rebello told me he still has hope that his brother Russel Rebello will be found safe and sound, five days after the cruise liner hit a rock and capsized off the Tuscan coast. ?I am 100 percent sure,? Kevin said.

The two brothers hail from Bombay, India, but Russel was working as a waiter on the ship. He was last seen helping passengers off the crashed vessel. He had no life jacket and was working with other crew members to lower rescue boats.

It's an optimistic view of survival that is not shared by many on this island. Nobody has been pulled alive since Sunday and today is expected to bring a shift in efforts ? from rescue to salvage.

Russel?s name appears on Italian authorities list of 28 passengers, including four crew members, still missing. More than 4,200 people were aboard the ship when the accident happened. So far, officials have confirmed 11 dead.

The Costa Concordia has?500,000 gallons?of fuel which could take weeks to remove. But for the moment little can be done. Overnight the vessel moved slightly and divers had to be pulled off for their own safety. So far they have not been back.

Rough seas delay efforts to find more survivors aboard the cruise ship that capsized Friday night off the coast of Italy. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports from Giglio, Italy.

On Tuesday divers blasted holes in the hull to gain access to parts of the ship that have so far remained blocked. Five bodies were removed. As Kevin is no doubt aware, they had life jackets on and it's unlikely they were crew members; they have not been identified yet.

The lack of progress in the last 24 hours is certainly not due to lack of effort. Earlier, one of the search commanders was treated after collapsing from exhaustion and in the cafeterias and make-shift rest areas the tiredness shows on the faces of the rescue workers.

So now everyone here is waiting. For the next stage in the salvage effort or the possibility of an incoming storm that could bring six-foot waves and further disrupt things. For Kevin ? he is waiting for any news about his brother at all.

DigitalGlobe

The Costa Concordia ran aground Jan. 13 off the coast of Italy, resulting in the evacuation of thousands of passengers as the ship began heavily listing.

Helping him stay positive is the knowledge that his brother's last known actions were helping others. ?I am very proud of him,? he said. ?That's the most important thing. The crew are the real heroes.?

Using choke, Gonzaga returns to run through Oliveira at UFC 142

Gabriel Gonzaga lost his confidence and his passion. He got it back tonight in Rio de Janeiro.

The former heavyweight title contender schooled hotshot prospect Edinaldo Oliveira in less than four minutes. Gonzaga made it look easy as he took the 6-foot-7 Oliveira to the ground and eventually locked on a nasty rear-naked choke to force the tap at 3:22 of the first round.

[Don't miss the action: Watch UFC 142 live on Y! Sports]

Gonzaga last fought with the promotion in Oct. of 2010 and then abruptly retired. He had a comeback fight with a smaller promotion in October of 2011. He rose near the top of the division after going 4-0 with the promotion, but then lost badly to UFC heavyweight champ Randy Couture at UFC 74. After that fight, Gonzaga looked tentative and wilted in big moments going just 3-4.

Oliveira was way in over his head tonight. He looked to small for the weight class and his takedown defense was shaky. Once Gonzaga got him to the ground, Oliveira was easy prey.

South Carolina Primary Election by the Numbers (ContributorNetwork)

The focus of the Republican nominees for president is on South Carolina as all six mainstream candidates try to woo voters in the Palmetto State. NPR states the winner of a contested Republican primary in South Carolina has always won the national nomination for president since the contest was first run in 1980.

Here's a statistical look at South Carolina's primary election by the numbers.

9: Candidates on the official ballot. Herman Cain and Rep. Michele Bachmann are still on the ballot despite dropping out of the race. Aside from the six other mainstream candidates, Gary Johnson is also on the ballot. The candidates are listed alphabetically.

2,722,344: Registered voters in South Carolina as of Jan. 1, according to the South Carolina State Election Commission. The New York Times reported in 2008 that just more than 430,000 people cast votes in the last primary election for president. South Carolina doesn't require a party affiliation when registering to vote. That means anyone who is registered can vote in this year's primary.

4,625,354: People in South Carolina, according to the U.S. Census. Almost three-fourths of the population are 18 years of age or older.

12: Hours polls are open. Voting begins at 7 a.m. and lasts until 7 p.m. on Saturday.

143,224: Votes garnered by Sen. John McCain in South Carolina in 2008. He had the approval of 33.2 percent of Republican voters and won by fewer than 15,000 votes and less than 4 percent. McCain's victory was the smallest in terms of percentage in the history of the South Carolina primary.

46: Counties in South Carolina. By comparison, Iowa has 99 and New Hampshire has 10. There are 2,136 precincts. Greenville County in the northwest part of the state has the most registered voters and voting precincts in South Carolina for one county.

3: Presidential primary contests Mitt Romney will win should he take South Carolina. A new Reuters poll suggests Romney is ahead of his nearest competition by 21 percentage points with less than a week until the primary election. Romney would sweep the first three nominating contests if he is victorious in the Palmetto State.

Myanmar frees more political prisoners, U.S. lauds move (Reuters)

YANGON (Reuters) ? Myanmar freed at least 200 political prisoners on Friday in an amnesty that prompted the United States to upgrade diplomatic relations as one of the world's most reclusive states opens up after half a century of authoritarian rule.

The move by Myanmar could embolden the opposition and put pressure on the West to lift sanctions. Among those freed are long-persecuted democrats and ethnic leaders whose proven ability to organize and inspire could increase pressure on President Thein Sein to accelerate nascent reforms.

In Washington, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the United States was ready to begin the process of exchanging full ambassadors after an absence of two decades, and would consider additional measures if the new civilian-led government's reforms continue.

The United States and Europe have said freeing political prisoners is crucial to even considering lifting the economic sanctions that have isolated the former British colony, also known as Burma, and pushed it closer to China during five decades of often-brutal military rule that ended last March.

U.S. President Barack Obama called the release a "substantial step forward" in the Asian country's democratic reforms. "Much more remains to be done to meet the aspirations of the Burmese people, but the United States is committed to continuing our engagement," Obama said in a statement.

As big as France and Britain combined, Myanmar lies between India, China and Southeast Asia with ports on the Indian Ocean and Andaman Sea, all of which make it an energy security asset for Beijing's landlocked western provinces and a U.S. priority as Obama strengthens engagement with Asia.

Its resources include natural gas, timber and precious gems. Myanmar is building a multibillion-dollar port through which oil can reach a 790-km (490-mile) pipeline under construction with Chinese money and workers.

It was unclear exactly how many political detainees were among the 651 inmates covered by the amnesty, the second ordered by authorities in four months. About 230 political detainees were released in an earlier general amnesty on October 12.

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma), a group that tracks prisoners, said at least 200 had been freed on Friday. These included Min Ko Naing and other members of the "88 Generation Students Group", who led a pro-democracy uprising in 1988 when thousands of protesters were killed.

Also freed was Shin Gambira, a Buddhist monk who led 2007 street protests crushed by the army. He was 27 years old when sentenced to 68 years in prison in 2007. Khin Nyunt, the once-powerful chief of military intelligence (MI), was also released from house arrest.

Appointed prime minister in 2003, he ushered in a then-derided seven-point "roadmap to democracy" but was purged a year later in circumstances that were never explained. He had been under house arrest ever since.

Speaking to reporters outside his home in Yangon, Khin Nyunt expressed hope for the country, citing recent meetings between the president and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, and visits by dignitaries such as Clinton, who last month became the first U.S. secretary of state to visit Myanmar in 50 years.

'GOOD SIGNS'

"These are good signs," he said, after stressing he had no plans to return to government. "I'm not going into politics."

Sai Nyunt Lwin, 60, a prominent ethnic Shan politician, said he and all other leaders of his former Shan Nationalities' League for Democracy (SNLD) were freed.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also welcomed the prisoner release, calling it the most significant to date, and called on the international community to respond "by helping build conditions for sustaining the reform process."

"The release of all political prisoners is a longstanding demand of the international community and I warmly welcome these releases as a further demonstration of the Burmese government's commitment to reform," British Foreign Secretary William Hague said in a statement.

The amnesty is a gamble for Thein Sein, a former general.

Freed dissidents will no doubt strengthen Suu Kyi's movement, but there are also concerns some could push for changes more radical than the government and Suu Kyi want.

Suu Kyi, a 1991 Nobel Peace Prize-winner released in 2010 from 15 years of house arrest, will run in a by-election for parliament in April and has said she trusts the new nominally civilian government that replaced the junta last March.

The United States downgraded its diplomatic representation in Myanmar to charge d'affaires following the military coup in 1988 and a violent crackdown on pro-democracy protests in the country.

Clinton, citing progress on a number of fronts, said the next step was to identify a candidate to return to Myanmar as the U.S. ambassador.

"This is a lengthy process, and it will, of course, depend on continuing progress and reform. But an American ambassador will help strengthen our efforts to support the historic and promising steps that are now unfolding," Clinton said.

On Thursday, the government signed a ceasefire with ethnic Karen rebels to try to end one of the world's longest-running insurgencies, although fighting still rages with ethnic Kachins in the north. The government has also some eased media controls.

"The government should ensure that there are no obstacles to these activists participating in public life and upcoming elections," rights group Human Rights Watch said in a statement. It called for international monitors to be allowed in to account for political prisoners that might still be behind bars.

The exact number of political prisoners remains unclear.

Rights groups and the United Nations have put it at about 2,100. But Minister for Home Affairs Lieutenant General Ko Ko told U.N. Special Rapporteur Tomas Ojea Quintana in August the number was 600, or about 400 after the October 12 amnesty.

Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy put the total on Friday at about 500. It provides help to more than 460 people it considers "prisoners of conscience", said Naing Naing, the party official in charge of assistance. There were "a few dozen" more who did not seek its help, he said.

....so it begins. (A roleplay partner search.)

I know most of you (or whoever was so kind enough to open this) do not want to read a long description, so I'll try my best to make it simple and short. I've been absent from this site for a while, and I just became active again. I'm having a few problems in trying to find a roleplaying partner, so that being said, let's get on with it!

When I roleplay, I like to be descriptive as possible! I do not like short paragraphs, and I normally write a range from 1200 - 1700, but that all depends on the story. If I'm really feeling the storyline, you'll basically get a novel from me. If you are one of those people who uses five sentences in a paragraph that's equal to one post - this is not for you.

Mature content is a big thing I've faced over the years of being on this website. I can do just about anything when it comes to sexual content, language, violence, drug usage, etc. I'm not afraid nor embarassed to put it onto a storyline, but I can do whatever makes my partner comfortable. If you want to tone the maturity down, I will have no problem with that whatsoever. Just as long as you're happy, I am happy. :)

As always, I'd love to become friends with my partner! I normally use AIM a lot, so it'd be best to contact me there if you'd desire. If you're not willing to talk to me in an IM, then you could always PM me on this website because I am now going to check this website daily.

Speaking of 'days', I will normally give a post about 2-3 times a day, and that's because I don't really do much during the day, so I am pretty active. However, I do have a life, and even though I sometimes may not act like it, I do go and enjoy the outside world every so often.

Now, I'm sure you're wondering what I'm into. I'm a big realistic roleplayer, but I can break some necks whenever it comes to Fantasy/Medieval. (That was also a joke, Y U SO SERIOUS?) I have also done a lot of thrillers and psychological roleplays as well, so I'm pretty experienced with that. One thing is for certain - I absolutely cannot STAND high school roleplays or anything involving with that kind of crap. I do like romance in a roleplay, but I will not tolerate love-at-first-sight. It's just something I've never really liked, and I won't change my ways now.

As for characters, I can double easily. I've had to play many males and females, so I have experience with both. I don't have a preference, but if you do, just let me know, and we'll get to brainstorming.

So, I do believe that is about it. I know I said this was going to be short and simple, but I guess I lied. :S ANYWAY, if you're interested and want to start up a story with me, please do not hesitate to PM me. I do not bite, and I will welcome you with open arms. I am open to any ideas, but I do warn you, I am a blunt person, however, I am not rude when it comes to it. If I don't like your idea, please do not be offended. Hope to hear from some of you very soon! :D

Mexico presses US House speaker on arms traffic (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Mexican President Felipe Calderon has asked U.S. House Speaker John Boehner to crack down on weapons trafficking that has fueled drug violence in Mexico.

Calderon's office says the president stressed the importance of stopping illegal trafficking of weapons and cash into Mexico.

The government says Mexico's drug cartels import much of their weaponry from the United States.

Boehner and Michigan Rep. Dave Camp visited Mexico on Friday along with other members of Congress to discuss security and economic and political issues with Mexican officials.

Calderon's office says the U.S. delegation praised Mexico's five-year offensive against drug cartels.

The U.S. delegation previously visited Colombia and Brazil.

Egyptian fugitive causes stir at London lecture (AP)

LONDON ? A former Egyptian finance minister sought on corruption charges has been able to escape an angry crowd at the London School of Economics with the help of the school's security team.

The LSE says Youssef Boutros Ghali attended a public lecture Monday night and was helped out a side door after his presence prompted a hostile response.

The school said in a statement Tuesday it was acting out of a concern for public safety. It says security personnel notified London police about Boutros Ghali's presence.

The 59-year-old Boutros Ghali lives openly in London but is being sought by Egyptian authorities on criminal fraud charges. He served under former President Hosni Mubarak, whose regime was toppled last year.

Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone not shy in public

Talk about stepping up the public displays of affection!

Apparently not content with simply holding hands anymore, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone engaged in some serious smooching over the weekend for all the world to see.

MORE: Spider-Man Hotness Alert! Check Out Andrew Garfield's Bulging Biceps

Yep. The cute couple didn't hesitate to show how they feel about each other by pausing three (yes, three!) times to lock lips as they shopped and strolled in New York City on Sunday.

Of course, these two will be seen utilizing similar moves when their flick, "The Amazing Spider-Man," hits theaters this summer.

This is certainly a nice preview, though!

Iranian, Venezuelan leaders rebuff U.S., joke about bomb (Reuters)

CARACAS (Reuters) ? Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Venezuela's Hugo Chavez lavished praise on each other on Monday, mocked U.S. disapproval and joked about having an atomic bomb at their disposal.

Despite their geographical distance, the fiery anti-U.S. ideologues have forged increasingly close ties between their fellow OPEC nations in recent years, although concrete projects have often lagged behind the rhetoric.

"One of the targets that Yankee imperialism has in its sights is Iran, which is why we are showing our solidarity," Chavez said during a joint press conference. "When we meet, the devils go crazy," he said, mocking U.S. warnings that Latin American nations should not help the Islamic Republic.

But the two countries signed only vague cooperation accords and Chavez gave few signals that Venezuela would seek to undercut toughened sanctions over Iran's nuclear program by providing fuel or cash.

They appeared to cautiously avoid statements on sensitive issues including Iran's threat to close the Straight of Hormuz, a shipping channel crucial for the global oil trade.

Ahmadinejad was in Venezuela at the start of a tour intended to shore up support as expanded Western economic sanctions take effect over Iran's nuclear program.

"The imperialist madness has been unleashed in a way that has not been seen for a long time," Chavez said in a ceremony to welcome Ahmadinejad at his presidential palace in Caracas.

The two men hugged, beamed, held hands and showered each other with praise.

"President Chavez is the champion in the war on imperialism," Ahmadinejad said.

The agreements include an economic cooperation deal that offered few details and another relating to nanotechnology.

They did not include any arrangement for Venezuela to provide fuel to Iran, which in the past led Washington to impose relatively mild sanctions on the South American nation, or any economic lifeline to Iran which now faces threats to its all-vital oil income.

Venezuela's oil minister said the Organization of the Oil Exporting Countries, or OPEC, did not plan to make any statement about the sanctions.

As he often does, the theatrical and provocative Chavez stuck his finger right into the global political sore spot, joking that a bomb was ready under a grassy knoll in front of his Miraflores palace steps.

"That hill will open up and a big atomic bomb will come out," he said, the two men laughing together.

U.S. officials from President Barack Obama down have expressed disquiet over Venezuela's close ties with Iran. They fear Chavez will weaken the international diplomatic front against Iran and could give Tehran an economic lifeline.

The United States and its allies accuse Iran of aiming to produce a nuclear weapon. Iran says its nuclear program is only for power generation and other peaceful purposes.

As well as Venezuela, Ahmadinejad plans to visit Nicaragua, Cuba and Ecuador - a tour that Washington has said shows its "desperation" for friends.

"You're going to the axis of evil, Ahmadinejad," Chavez joked, referring to allied Latin American countries that have openly confronted the United States.

ALLIES

Those nations' governments share Chavez's broad global views, but do not have Venezuela's economic clout and are unable to offer Iran any significant assistance.

Regional economic powerhouse Brazil, which gave the Iranian leader a warm welcome when he visited during the previous government of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, was notably absent from his agenda this time.

Ahmadinejad, who is subordinate to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on foreign policy and other matters, has said little about the rising tensions with the West, including the sentencing to death of an Iranian-American man for spying for the CIA. The United States denies that the man is a spy.

"The only bombs we're preparing are bombs against poverty, hunger and misery," added Chavez, saying Iranian constructors have built 14,000 new homes in Venezuela recently.

Ahead of hosting Ahmadinejad, Ecuador's government also offered moral support, pledging to ignore Western sanctions.

"We say with clarity that we do not accept those sanctions," Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino told reporters.

"We are a sovereign nation, we don't have dads punishing us and putting us in the corner for behaving badly. They (the U.S.) should instead be sanctioning the U.S. companies doing massive business in Tehran like Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola."

Mexico says 1,500-barrel oil spill controlled (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Mexico's Environment Department says a spill of 1,500 barrels of oil from a pipeline near the Gulf coast has been brought under control, and about 40 percent of the oil has been recovered.

The department says some of the oil has been detected along a 5-mile (9-kilometer) stretch of the Coatzacoalcos river, which empties into the Gulf of Mexico.

The amount spilled is equal to about 63,400 gallons (240,000 liters).

The department said Monday the spill started Dec. 31 at a pipeline leading to a refinery operated by the state-owned oil monopoly Petroleos Mexicanos.

Video from the scene shows the banks of the river coated in black sludge.

Tennessee bumps off No. 13 Florida to open SEC play

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Kenny Hall scored a season-high 13 points as Tennessee upset No. 13 Florida 67-56 on Saturday to open the Southeastern Conference season.

The Gators, who have lost all four of their true road games this year, came in averaging 85.4 points this season, best among SEC teams and fifth in the nation. The Volunteers held them to 35.7 percent shooting while hitting 51 percent of their own attempts.

Josh Richardson hit a 3-pointer 41 seconds into the second half that set the tone for the Vols the rest of the way. Cameron Tatum stole the ball from Erving Walker on the next possession and ran it down the floor for a dunk to give Tennessee a 38-31 lead.

Kenny Boynton hit a 3-pointer for the Gators at the other end. Boynton, who entered the game averaging 19.5 points, finished with 13. Erik Murphy also had 13 for Florida (12-4, 0-1) and Patric Young added 12.

Renaldo Woolridge answered with a layup for the Vols. Tatum drew a charge by Bradley Beal and after running a bit of an offensive set drove to the basket to hit a layup to make it 42-34.

The Vols (8-7, 1-0) expanded their lead as they hit 12 of 22 shots in the second half while the Gators hit only 8 of 27. Tennessee controlled the post in the second half and outscored Florida 32-20 in the paint.

Smothered by defenders, Jordan McRae hit a jumper near the basket to give Tennessee a 65-49 lead with 1:57 to go, putting the game out of reach for Florida.

Jeronne Maymon and Trae Golden each added 12 points for Tennessee, while McRae finished with 10.

It's the first signature victory for first-year coach Cuonzo Martin, who replaced Bruce Pearl after the popular coach was fired for NCAA infractions. Pearl opened his own Tennessee career winning eight of nine games against Florida before finishing on a four-game losing streak in the series.

Tennessee had lost to its previous three ranked opponents this season by an average 5.7 points but looked listless in a 69-51 loss at Memphis on Wednesday.

The Gators got their customary strong performance from their starters, who are all averaging double-digit scoring this year. But Florida's reserves only managed one point, a free throw by Casey Prather.

Though Florida entered the game with the advantage in nearly every statistical category, the two teams played to a near draw in the first half, with Tennessee entering halftime with a 33-29 lead.

The Vols outshot the Gators 48.1 percent to 41.4 percent in the first half and had four more points in the paint. Thanks to a solid effort by McRae, who was relegated to the bench for the first time all season, the Tennessee reserves outscored Florida's 11-0 in the first half.

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The concept has been around for about 15 years but pet health insurance is more popular than ever with a variety of plan options.

Pet health insurance could mean the difference between a sick or injured animal getting treatment or not.

?It?s a reality and a daily occurrence.?

Sally Powell is supervisor of nursing in emergency service at the Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

She has pet health insurance plan for her animals with a $200 deductible and had to use it recently for her Pomeranian.

?And so I paid $200 dollars and the insurance paid the rest which was several thousand dollars.?

Veterinarian Dr. Larwrence Rebbecchi owns and operates Philadelphia Animal Hospital and the Philadelphia Pet Hotel and Villas. He says there are a variety of plans available but an extra step isn?t appealing some pet owners.

?Most veterinarians, probably in fact all veterinarians, do not accept that as payment and in fact the client pays and then they are reimbursed by the insurance company so that?s why a lot.?

Most plans have caps and deductibles. Premiums vary.

Sony Pictures says "The Girl Who Played With Fire" -- the sequel to "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" -- is still on track to be produced despite the first film under-performing at the box office, according to ew.com.

"Fire" is the second in the series of books that the films are based on.

Though "Dragon Tattoo" has made $60 million and has received high marks from viewers, it is still perceived as having a weak showing at the box office.
